The UN human rights office, OHCHR, has expressed concern over the detention of people in Delhi and urged their immediate release. It also called on the government to respect the right to peaceful protest.
In a statement, OHCHR said police handling of protests must meet the standards of “necessity and proportionality.” The body said any restrictions on peaceful assembly should be justified under those principles.
The statement comes amid concerns over how protests were managed in the national capital. OHCHR has urged authorities to ensure that rights to peaceful protest are protected.
